The Advantages of Lithium Ion Battery Pack Design are now considered to be significant and outweigh any previous drawbacks with the technology when it was in it's infancy. Indeed, Lithium Ion (or Lion, Li-Ion) Battery Technology is now included in almost every advanced mobile electronic device manufactured today. 

One of the many advantages of Lithium Ion Battery Pack Design is that it is very adaptable and can be produced in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, power outputs and re-charge rates.

As well as adaptable, Lithium Ion Batteries are also very scalable, both in size and power output. To achieve the necessary power configuration, instead of using just one battery cell, multiple battery cells are combined in such a way as to deliver the energy needed by the target device or application, whether in series, parallel, or a combination of both.

Battery Pack Design Considerations. 

The chemical make up of batteries is also a major consideration. These different battery chemistries each have their own strengths and weaknesses and may be affected by environmental and operational considerations. 

 Advantages of Lithium Ion Battery Pack Design:

• High energy density - potential for yet higher capacities.
• Does not need prolonged priming when new. One regular charge is all that's needed.
• Relatively low self-discharge - self-discharge is less than half that of nickel-based batteries.
• Low Maintenance - no periodic discharge is needed; there is no memory.
• Specialty cells can provide very high current to applications such as power tools.

Lithium Ion and Nickel Metal Hydride, for example, have different characteristics. Lithium ion (li-ion) generally delivers significantly greater capacity and power than Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH), but has a tendency to be less stable and requires greater design complexity to ensure that it is safe for handling and usage (especially when being re-charged). 

These considerations are often overcome as Custom Designed Li-ion Battery Packs are the power unit of choice for high-end devices such as laptop computers, mobile phones and electric bikes.
